Tree Selection & Planting
First Things First
There is no better time to influence tree health than at planting. Selecting the right tree for the right spot may have as much influence on the long-term success of your trees as any other factor in its entire life. Once the right tree has been chosen, it must be properly planted.
What is The Right Tree?
There are two main factors to consider when helping decide which tree to plant. First, it is important to consider what the client wants or expects out of the tree. Secondly, the site is examined to make sure that the tree will grow well in its space.
Proper Planting
Planting technique can dictate how quickly a tree becomes successfully established and how long a tree lives. A “quick and easy” planting job often means another planting job just a few years later.
Many trees are planted or mulched too deep. While mulch is necessary for healthy young trees, too much mulch is common. The general rule of thumb is that mulch should be no deeper than 3″ and must be pulled away from the trunk of the tree. The wider the mulch ring the better.
The extra work required to assure the tree is planted is relatively minimal. However, the effort certainly pays maximum long-term dividends in a healthier tree.
