Root Zone Improvement
Root of the Problem
The roots are the foundation of a tree. When that foundation is in an ideal environment, the whole tree is stronger and healthier. The reality, however, is that there are very few aspects about our neighborhoods that qualify as an “ideal” environment for tree roots. The top soil has usually been removed and replaced with compacted subsoil; turf limits water and nutrient availability; and driveways & sidewalks limit how wide the roots can spread. Many ailments can be traced back to unhealthy roots. Unhealthy roots are often a product of their environment. These problems commonly remain undiagnosed or improperly diagnosed due to lack of information about the roots. The best known way to discover and address these issues is to expose the tree’s roots.
Aleviating Soil Compaction
Often, simply reducing compaction through a process known as “radial trenching” will help a tree thrive. There are several ways to place radial trenches around a tree. Most of these are temporairly destructive to the roots. Trenching with air excavation is not only a more effective way to de-compact the soil, but it does so without damaging the roots.
Girdling Roots
When a root wraps around the trunk of a tree, it can cut off flow of nutrients and water. These girdling roots are best removed with a root colar excavation. Again, it is is important to not damage the other roots or the trunk of the tree when girdling roots are being removed.
An answer to all of these concerns: Air Excavation
Advanced Tree Health uses a specialized tool called an AirKnife to safely remove the soil from roots to address all of the problems detailed above.
